Misted Windows: How Do I Know If Double Glazing Has Failed?

You’ll know that your double glazing has failed if you have misted windows. It can be frustrating when this occurs, whether it’s a faulty system or your unit has obtained some damage. Read on to find out more about the issue and whether you need a full replacement or whether it can be repaired.

What Are Misted Windows?

Misted windows can occur within double glazed units. Double glazing describes two panes of glass in a frame. These panes are usually separated by a pocket of argon gas to increase insulation. There are many benefits of having this type of window, including better energy efficiency, noise reduction and more security. Misting occurs when there’s a fault somewhere in the system and this causes condensation between the panes.

A double glazed unit should be sealed and air tight, meaning nothing should be in between the panes. If there is a presence of moisture, then you should definitely seek professional help as this means it’s not going to be performing as it should. The insulating properties and energy efficiency it once had are now compromised, so money could literally be going out the window!

To Repair Or Replace?

It is very much possible to replace just the panes in misted windows rather than the whole frame. If that is where the issue is, and not obvious damage to a frame, then getting a new double glazing unit is all that’s needed.

For uPVC that isn’t in good order, we will probably recommend a brand new window for optimal performance.

Other Signs Of Failed Double Glazing

Misted windows isn’t the only sign of a failed unit. Look out for things like noticeable draughts, water leaks and obvious cracks or damage. If your units are over a certain age, they probably need to be replaced. They usually last for 25-30 years and deteriorate in performance over time. The older they are, it’s less likely they will be benefiting your home. For replacements, call our team now.
